about

Some of the most captivating entities of this existence are those that are both present and absent at the same time. Several esoteric ways of life from Ifá to Freemasonry have opened the human consciousness to engage those that are but are beyond being. The soul. Air. The spoken word. Meaning. The picture in the multiplicity of strokes and colors. The art of Pomona California's (by way of San Bernardino) Phantom Thrett is one instance of such paradox of simultaneous appearance and disappearance. As a tangible illusion floating through the worldwide underground and creating the most memorable time capsules of the 2010s until now, Thrett has ran the gamut as the most well-known unknown; the powerful absent present who materializes unannounced, stirs up a massive collection of impressive vintage anthems, and vanishes just when your tongue begins to encode his name into its hard drive. There is always something about him and his work that can only be said in its unsaying. One has to be lured into his obscurity to unsee the music clearly. These are the sonic paintings Thrett has always done, and this is what he does again in the undoing of everything before this moment in Loose Leaves 2.

Releasing on the 9th anniversary of Loose Leaves 1, Phantom reimagines his initial mixtape approach with a deep enlightenment that sages go through battle scars to attain. Mostly produced by Jippy, The pen maturity of Loose Leaves 2 reveals a focused, playful, and forward-thinking MC/producer/vocalists who litters bite-sized wisdom over vintage tracks like a philosophical ecologist gone rogue. “Saving Grace” showcases Thrett looking past the short-sightedness of musical glamour offering autobiographical images such as “I believe the word is amateur/When I was nineteen wildin’ on tour/living my dream but overcame the allure of it.” The rare soul-feeling “Low, Down & Dirty” narrates a day in Thrett’s reality alongside a magic woman who sweeps the world from under one’s feet and persuades them into flying to unimaginable heights. “How Can I” serves as the chance on the record any seasoned MC takes to talk their shit and display supremacy, but in Thrett’s hands, it also doubles and triples as another teaching moment with lines such as “How can I continue to keep a glow/All of us can radiate, but you’re the blade just so they know.” “Turning Point” is a snapshot of the place where the wizard spell casts, an undisclosed location in plain sight where dusty records clothe a purple wall and Thrett’s MV-8000 travels through time and sounds most unique when the means of breaking generational curses are kept secret and songs are written standing up. Gravity is defied and one gets the closest to the smoky figure creating this journey…until you reach out to give him a pound and you realize you’re dapping the wind…
